Boreal Tenebrae is an upcoming retro-style adventure game. Inspired by PlayStation 1 classics, the game combines a mysterious atmosphere with horror elements.
The town is diseased. Haunted by odd boxes that emit a particular static frequency. Those who hear it vanish, never to return.
As teenager Bree, you’ll investigate the town in search of your sister, Sarah. She began a mysterious ritual, but it consumed her and she disappeared. The only way to save your sister is to explore the town, solve its mysteries, and complete the ritual.
Not unlike Silent Hill or Stranger Things, the town has two sides to it. In your adventure, you’ll explore its light and dark versions. You’ll also experience the narrative of Boreal Tenebrae through the viewpoints of multiple characters, each with their own story and motivations.

Boreal Tenebrae‘s retro aesthetic and fixed camera angle will no doubt interest fans of old-school adventure games. Coupled with its mix of mystery and horror, the game looks set to be an indie hit.
Moreover, Boreal Tenebrae was nominated for Best Art Direction and Best Narrative at the Canadian Game Awards 2021. As such, it was among other high-profile games like Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
While the release date is still unknown, Boreal Tenebrae is coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. For PC players, you can check out the game’s first episode on Steam.
