Horizon Forbidden West Will Have A “Performance Mode”

Speaking with French YouTuber Julien Chièze, Guerrilla Games’ Mathijs de Jonge (Game Director) and Benjamin McCaw (Narrative Director) discussed some key elements of Forbidden West.

Notably, the developers confirmed that Horizon Forbidden West will have a “Performance Mode”. Therefore, PlayStation 5 owners will be able to enjoy the game at 60 FPS on PlayStation 5. Of course, as is the standard for this new generation of consoles, higher frames per second will no doubt come at the cost of a lower resolution. Nonetheless, it is good to know that players will have a choice in the matter.

The news will no doubt come as a relief to a lot of players, especially because last week’s gameplay footage did not specify if players would be able to prioritize frames per second.

Moreover, de Jonge clarified how free climbing will work. In short, everything can be climbed thanks to a system that automatically annotates surfaces with climbing points. So, if you want to climb a cliff, a building, a tree, or anything else, you absolutely can. Additionally, the Focus Scan ability is not mandatory. As de Jonge said, it serves two main purposes. To highlight the quickest way up and for finding climbing points in low-light areas.

Horizon Forbidden West will launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. While there is no official release date, an interview with the Head of PlayStation Studios revealed that this Holiday Season is the target.
